IOWA WINERIES: Wineries take product from vine to table
Coverage continues on a three-day series saluting Iowa wineries. Getting wine them from the vine to the bottle depends on just who is doing the work, and several area wineries demonstrated their processes from grape to glass.
Trimming Grape Vines - The Key To A Sweet Harvest
What part does trimming grape vines play in successfully growing great grapes at home? Because it takes several years from the time a new grape vine is planted until the first harvest can be picked and eaten, the backyard grape grower will want to be certain to care for his plants properly along the way. There is no bigger disappointment in grape growing than to eagerly anticipate that first luscious crop and after waiting for it for several years, end up without a single edible grape, but it happens. Pruning grape vines correctly is a key component of a successful grape harvest.
Grape vines do not fruit the first year, because the fruit develops off of the new growth from one year old canes. During the first growing season, the stronger of the two canes that grow from the new plant should be trained to a vertical stake six to eight feet tall. The weaker cane should be cut off, along with any sprouting suckers. One of the canes must be at least three feet tall the first season to proceed; it neither is, cut both back to two buds and give your vine another growing season to establish itself, repeating this process the following year.
Every year thereafter, you'll want to heavily prune your grape vine while the plant is dormant during the late fall or early spring. Trimming grape vines back heavily will help your plants produce the highest quality grapes once they start fruiting. Somewhere between the second and fourth years, depending on the variety being grown, your vines will finally grow grapes!
The novice grape grower is often excited by the first sight of his grape vines dripping heavily with fruit. He assumes that the abundance of young grapes indicates that his plants are doing well and that they will get by without his trimming grape vines; however, this show is misleading. If the vines are overloaded with fruit, the plant can not support itself and if the grapes even ripen, they will be of poor quality and inedible. Although it may seem counterproductive to a great harvest at first glance, trimming grape vines correctly is a critical step in growing great grapes at home.
It takes a long time to grow grapes, but the sweet end result makes it worth taking the time to tend to them properly. With patience and proper pruning, your grape vines will supply you with a luscious crop for many, many years.
